Returning from watching one spectacular show of lights at the foot of the Eildons Hills in the Scottish Borders where I live I was driving along the A68 home in our VW camper van when BAM! A great thud hit the windscreen and I was horrified to see an owl bounce across the carriageway, hit the kerb and onto the verge.

We quickly turned the van to see if there was anything to be done, luckily late at night there was no traffic so I jumped out and picked up what I was sure would be a finished wee bundle.

I could at the very least ease his passing. We got home and my ‘assistant’ held the feathered patient while I swiftly picked up my remedy bag.

Sad & fairly sure that the floppy wee bird was going to drift off and away we sat and nursed him when SUDDENLY his eyes popped wide open, he leapt out my arms, ran across the table, did a flight round the room settling on the curtains!! I leapt up & grabbed him round his wings to avoid further damage and WOW I had never felt talons like it. My assistant had to peel him off my hand and pop him in a box while we laughed with surprise and joy. Not out of the woods I peered tentatively into the box next morning to be greeted by such a beautiful creature, what a privilege.

The SSPCB arrived later that morning amazed at his recovery and reported back that, after investigation at the vet he had been released back into the wild. She was very keen to know what I had used and will be suggesting it to the rescue centre. Shock is the main cause of death in both humans and animals and you can have this wonderful emergency remedy to hand where ever you go.
