Vitamin Capsule

Do I really need supplements?

So many people that see me are confused about this.

Many of us have a cupboard stocked like a health food shop with shelves full of the latest ‘this’ll do it’ bottles that are used with enthusiasm for a while & then put to the back, not thrown away but kept, with loyalty, for many years “it was pricey” and “ not quite sure whether I should still take it”

The supplement industry is a multi billion pound business with a marketing and advertising budget to go with it. Stronger immune system, glowing skin, no joint pain ,increased fertility but this is a short cut that might only relieve you of your money!

They are often made of very poor quality ingredients and the variety and claims overwhelming.

I remember when vitamin supplements were things only astronauts or people in futuristic movies needed! Fast forward and even children take them in tempting ‘gummy’ form.

So how do we find our way through the supplement maze & is there an alternative?

Ideally I would always suggest these essential nutrients and vitamins from source, in your daily diet.

However, with ever depleting soil due to intensive farming methods over the last 80 years or so. The use of chemicals, pesticides, processing, plastic wrapping, transport and extended shelf life, some of our food has very little left.

Supplements can then play a part in replacing some of what could be missing, however you can reduce this need by moving towards a healthier, at source diet.

If you are convinced that supplements are for you then here is a watch list

Check the ingredients if any say Chlorides, Sulphates, Carbonates, Oxides eg Magnesium Oxide then avoid as this form is very difficult for your body to absorb and you will need more of them to get any benefit.

If they are in the form of Citrates, Ascorbates or Polynicotinates the body can absorb them easier and you will need less.

Also choose capsules instead of tablets as the tablets use bulkers and fillers to hold their form and breaking these down can be very difficult for your body.

A capsule usually has only the essential nutrients

Use capsules made from vegetable rource rather than bovine gelatin and realise that some oil capsules can be poor in quality due to processing.

Confused woman

Take your time, eat the best diet you can afford, wean yourself off any processed & refined foods & supplement where needed until the balance has improved.

One meal/snack at a time, a complete overhaul of your diet in one go usually results in failure, stress and disappointment.

Eat organic where possible

Grow your own, daunting and unfamiliar for some of us but home growing has had a massive resurgence since 2020 with people reporting improved mental health & general well being as well as the freshest produce, on your doorstep reducing the food bills and feeding your family better.

Cook from scratch it doesn’t have to be fancy and you are then absolutely sure of what you are eating

Remove/wean from refined sugars there are plenty of natural sweeteners to use in baking, puddings, drinks that are still nutritionally intact.

Vary your diet include, nuts, seeds, legumes, pulses and a wide variety of vegetables

Pro-biotics - natural organic yoghurt, pricey but so easy to make at home and then you only need to buy it occasionally. Pro-biotics improve digestion and help boost your immune system

Use good quality fats and oils avoid blended/low fat varieties it is not the fat that is the baddy (more in the cholesterol myth blog) Quality not quantity

Avoid any ‘free from’ products or substitutes as most are highly processed or have chemical /artificial replacements
